This is the time of year I spend a great deal of time staring at a calendar, filling in the squares with names of shows and cities where I hope to be with Loveworn this year. Last year I did over 52 events, a personal best. this meant that I spent 45 days in a hotel. Thank goodness for Priceline!
The process is like this: I study a long list of art shows across the country and choose those that for a variety of reasons meet certain criteria. I then go online and submit a description and pictures of my work, along with a jury fee. The art show then has a jury that reviews all applicants, usually by medium, and narrow it down to however many they have space for and by medium. I then get an email weeks after applying that hopefully starts out saying, "Congratulations!" i apply to multiple shows on some weekends because I never know if I will get in. Consequently, every year is different, and I begin the year not knowing what my schedule will be. If you like routine, the art show circuit is not for you! On the other hand, if you love traveling, meeting all kinds of fantastic people (art lovers tend to be great souls), and exploring new territory, it's a great gig.
So as the snow is falling on this January night, I'm thinking about Harbor Springs, Michigan and State Colege, PA in July, Minneapolis in August, and lots of points in between. Filling in the squares.
